Soreng Theatre, Hult Center
We celebrate the life of gifted local composer and artist Jon Sutton with selections of his beautiful and sensitive choral works. His outstanding cantata for chamber choir and instrumental ensemble, The Family of Man, expresses a deep respect and love for our earth and our humanity. The texts are drawn from quotations of Sioux, Navajo and Pueblo native peoples, as well as Shakespeare, Kahlil Gibran, William Blake and Carl Sandburg. The Oregon Mozart Players will join the Eugene Concert Choir and the Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble in this memorial to Jon, conducted by Dr. Diane Retallack.
Jon Sutton, the composer of The Family of Man, has an extensive list of works for chamber ensemble, orchestra, choral ensemble, ballet and musical comedy. For many years he worked as a visual artist, creating hooked tapestries, screen-printing, watercolor and oil painting. Some of his artwork will be put on display in the lobby at the entrance to the Soreng Theater for the audience to enjoy. Mr. Sutton passed away this year but he will always be a gem in our midst and his beautiful contributions of art and music deserve to be honored.
