African Sanctus
Saturday, May 13, 2000, at 7:30 pm This powerful, visionary work by world-renowned British composer/adventurer David Fanshawe expresses the unity between peoples, their faiths and their music. The work integrates the traditional Latin Mass with authentic recordings of African tribal music. A children's choir, various instrumentalists and soprano Marlette Buchanan will be featured. In addition, Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble will perform 20th century African compositions. David Fanshawe is an internationally renowned composer, lecturer, photographer, and author who has written more than 50 scores for film and television. He will be "in residence" for the week before the performances, meeting with local media and visiting local schools. He will also appear in person during both performances to offer a brief lecture/demonstration and perform the piano solo. Additionally, Fanshawe will offer a free one-hour multimedia presentation entitled "African Sanctus: A Musical Journey of the River Nile" on Saturday, May 13, at 12 noon in the Soreng Theater. Joining the Eugene Concert Choir will be soprano soloist Marlette Buchanan; members of the Festival Boy Choir and the Festival Girl Choir, Peter Robb, Director; an instrumental ensemble featuring drums, guitar, and bass; and pianist Barbara Baird. The Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble will perform indigenous African folk songs. |
